7 Signs You Need to See a Dentist Immediately

Most people wait far too long to see a dentist — usually until the pain is unbearable. But several dental warning signs are worth acting on well before that point. Here are seven to take seriously.

1. Bleeding gums when you brush or floss

Occasional light bleeding can be normal if you've just started flossing again, but regular bleeding is usually an early sign of gum disease (gingivitis), which is fully reversible if treated early — and much harder to manage if it progresses.

2. A toothache that comes and goes

Intermittent pain, especially with hot, cold or sweet foods, often means the nerve inside a tooth is irritated or infected. It won't fix itself, and it typically gets worse, not better, over time.

3. Persistent bad breath

If bad breath doesn't go away with brushing and mouthwash, it can point to gum disease, a cavity, or an infection — not just something you ate.

4. A tooth that feels loose

Adult teeth should never feel loose. This can indicate advanced gum disease, bone loss, or trauma, and needs prompt evaluation to have any chance of saving the tooth.

5. Jaw pain or clicking when you chew

This can be a sign of TMJ (jaw joint) issues, teeth grinding, or a bite misalignment — all of which are manageable but tend to worsen without attention.

6. Visible swelling in your gums or face

Swelling, especially with pain and warmth to the touch, can signal a dental abscess — a genuine infection that in rare cases can spread and become a medical emergency. This one shouldn't wait.

7. It's simply been more than 6 months

Many serious dental issues — cavities, early gum disease, even oral lesions — have no symptoms at all in their early stages. A routine checkup and cleaning every six months catches these before they become painful (and expensive) problems.
